What are National Trails?

National Trails are long distance routes for walking, cycling and horse riding through the finest countryside in the land.

In England and Wales, there are 15 national trails which provide about 2,500 miles (4,000km) of walking opportunity.

The national trail nearest to Rosella Cottage in Rosedale Abbey is the Cleveland Way.

The Cleveland Way runs for 110 miles in a horseshoe loop around the edge of the North York Moors National Park.

Traditionally, it starts in Helmsley - about 30-minutes by car from Rosedale Abbey - and runs to the coast at Filey. 

The Yorkshire Wolds Way is another local National Trail which covers another 79 miles of fine North Yorkshire scenery.

It crosses the Yorkshire Wolds from Hessle and again ends in Filey.

The Cleveland Way is managed by the North York Moors National Park and Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council.

The Yorkshire Wolds Way is managed by East Riding of Yorkshire Council and North Yorkshire County Council.

Both long distance walks are excellent and they can be completed in one-go; or else broken into a series of day-walks over several weekends; or even several years!

Rosella Luxury Holiday Cottage
