Four Pubs in Egton & Egton Bridge

Egton is a pretty village - maybe two villages which straggle together - in the Esk Valley on the North York Moors.

Egton "proper" sits at the top of the steep hill leading from the River Esk on the Eastern bank and Egton Bridge sits down in the valley by the river itself.

The village is home to four historic Inns - the Wheatsheaf and Ye Horseshoe Inn in the top village; and the Postgate and another Horseshoe - the Horseshoe Hotel - in the bottom village.

I paid a visit to the "bottom Horseshoe" as it is known locally on Thursday  night.

The Horseshoe Hotel on the Esk

The bottom Horseshoe in Egton Bridge is everything that a North York Moors country pub should be.

Bottom Horseshoe Egton

The Bottom Horseshoe Hotel is a Very Charming Country Hotel.

It is actually a classic country hotel offering rooms and dining to resident guests; as well as an Inn for drinks and meals for non-residents.

It's got a lovely cosy bar; with low ceilings, nice lighting, a roaring fire, nice decore, high-backed winged seating, and lots of knick-knacks around the walls to keep you interested.

 Bottom Horseshoe Egton bar

There is a Well-stocked bar; and Offering Great Bar Meals.

A massive Salmon caught in the Esk at Egton has pride of place and is worth the visit on it's own.

They've got some nice real Ales and a nice menu for bar meals.

The Bar Makes for a Very Cosy Space with Lovely Decore.

And for spring and summer visitors, there is outside seating on picnic tables in the beautiful grounds by the river.

It's totally charming and I can't recommend the Horseshoe Hotel at egton Bridge highly enough.

Getting to Egton Bridge

From Rosella Cottage in Rosedale, take the Heygate Lane which set's off uphill from the crossroads in the centre of the village.

The narrow single-width road goes directly over Hamer Moor and drops down into Egton Bridge about a dozen miles away.

The One that Definately Didn't get Away!  Look for it in the Bar.

The Horseshoe Hotel (postcode = YO21 1XE) sits by the roadside on left before you reach the first T-junction.

This really is a spendid drive in spring and summer when the Moors are at their best - but take care in winter as it can be icey or snowy.

For other visitors to the Moors, access Egton and Egton Bridge off the A171 between Guisborough and Whitby.
