The deep valley of Rosedale on the North York Moors runs for ten miles; cut by the River Seven from its source at Seven Stone on the high and wild Moor above Rosedale Abbey.
The river winds its way through the hard moorland ironstone to Hartoft End; and then onwards to Beck House where it enters the limestone before reaching the Vale of Pickering.
Rosedale Offers Stunning Scenery on the North York Moors.
Rosedale is an "odd" dale; in that it is wider at the top - between Thorgill and Clough House - at nearly one-and-a half-miles; but narrower at it's opening at Hartoft where it is just half-mile across.
The scenery in the dale is varied; you'll find everything from heather moorland, cotton-grass, deep bogs, rocky wooded gorges, and valley-bottom water meadows.
The lower valley sides and valley bottom form a a patchwork of farmers' fields
There's also conifer and broadleaf forests and numerous smaller copses.
And then there is the mellow stonework of the farmsteads and the pretty village of Rosedale Abbey itself towards the top end of the dale.
The look of dale changes through the seasons; and there is always colour on offer for the many visitors who holiday in Rosedale.
August and early September are particularly popular when the moors put on their annual blaze of purple heather.
Summer Heather on Spaunton Moor.
Autumn is often spectacular when the russet colours of the trees and the brown of the bracken contrasts nicely against the darkening moorland and green fields to provide nice views in all directions.
And winter snowfall gives the dale an unforgettable - almost Nordic - quality that is well worth a visit at that time of year.
With such a perfect pastoral beauty; it is no surprise that Rosedale offers walkers and cyclists so much chance to get outside and explore.
Walkers and Cyclist Out on the Rosedale Cinder Track Railway.
There are public footpaths throughout the dale; with the jewel in the crown being the ten mile circuit route of the long-abandoned cinder track railway.
This path - good in all weathers due to being firm underfoot offers the most spectacular views of the dale.
