Stay Warm & Dry in Rosedale

It has certainly been wet throughout much of the UK this past couple of months.

And although the North York Moors have escaped the worst of the wet-weather this time round; the fields and Moors are boggy; and many country footpaths are in a bad state, making it a horrible time for walkers.

Bog Walking

The Moorland & Fields in North Yorkshire are Very Wet in Spring.

But all is not lost - because thankfully - hikers visiting Rosedale can still find plenty of good country walks that don't involve getting covered in gloopy mud up to the eyeballs!

To my way of thinking, there's not much worse than losing a boot in some deep bog hole as you try to negotiate your way round an underwater cattle gate at the edge of some farmers field!

Walking with wet feet is the pits!!

Dry Walks in Rosedale

In Rosedale, we're blessed with numerous options for firm-under-foot walking paths that are largely clear of standing water and boggy obstacles.

Firstly, we have miles and miles of quiet country lanes and farm tracks which see little passing traffic at this time of year.

Country Roads

Rosedale's Country Lanes Are Quiet and Safe for Walking.

I did several 2-3 hour-length "on road" walks last week and only came across a handful of passing cars, the odd tractor, and our local Shepherd - young Luke - on his four-wheeler motorbike thinga-me-jig.

Farm Tracks in Rosedale Allow for Relatively Dry Walking.

Secondly, we can offer visitors the Rosedale Mineral Railway line which provides hikers with more than nine-miles of flattish walking on a well drained cinder track; and with great views at every turn.

The long-abandoned cinder track railway is a Victorian engineering wonder as it skirts around the steep sided valley of Rosedale.

The Rosedale Mineral Railway Provides Dry Year-round Walking.

And even in the wettest of months, it offers walkers the chance to get out and walk on the North York Moors without the need to worry about wet feet or muddy plother!

I'm not saying that walkers on the old railway will remain totally pristine - there are some short muddy- or wet-sections which need to be cautiously by-passed -  but in comparison to swampy field walking paths, its fantastic!

Not Too Bad - After Nearly 10-miles on the Cinder Track.

So, if you've been experiencing "cabin-fever" due to the rain and lack of a good walk in the fresh air; can I suggest you start to plan your next trip to Rosedale Abbey?

There's a few reasons Rosedale Abbey achieved Yorkshire's first 'Walkers are Welcome' status; and walkers are always welcome at Rosella Cottage!
