There is certainly a lot of nice scenery to be found across the North York Moors.
But what are the best views to discover if you're on holiday here and not sure where to go?
Today and tomorrow I'm providing an insider's guide to what I reckon are the best views to be found across the North York Moors.
Lovely Views Are Everywhere Across the North York Moors.
And the views I've chosen are all readily accessible by car or cycle on a circular route that starts and finishes in Rosedale Abbey.
Today I'll start with my all time favourite view to be found on the North York Moors.
Let me be honest; from a scenic point, this isn't the finest view you'll ever see on the North York Moors.
But it is very, very special; for two reasons.
Firstly, if you're arriving from the South, or West; this is actually the first proper view you'll get of the North York Moors.
You might have seen the Moors as a low ridge on the horizon all the way from the outskirts of York or from the A1 travelling North.
But at Yan Brow - you'll get your first real, proper glimse of the moorland habitat close-up.
Secondly, the crest of the road at Yan Brow marks a profound change in the landscape from the lowland Britain that you might have driven through for the previous few hours.
It always strikes me as an amaxing realization; from Yan Brow, the routine English woodland and fields on each side of the road suddenly open out to reveal the Moors right in front of you.
It's as if road itself points the way to the high Moorland Plateau.
Which is exactly what our ancient ancestors probably wanted it to do!
For right there in the apex of the road - where the sky meets the hills above - you'll see three Neolithic Tumuli sitting against the horizon on Spaunton Moor.
You'll See These Three Burial Mounds From Yan Brow.
Those ancient burial mounds - about seven miles away in the distance - have stood up there on the Moor for more than 5,000 years.
To me, the three barrows are like a giant sign-post pointing the way to the heart of the Moors at Rosedale.
The three barrows are a clear message across time from the ancient beaker people that you're home!
I think the ancestors placed the barrows exactly where they are so as they could be seen from Yan Brow.
And for that, Yan Brow is a very special view.
Yan Brow is on the road leading into the pretty village of Hutton-le-Hole from the South.
It's off the A171 where you turn at Keldhome.
Yan Brow is Just a Mile to the South of Hutton-le-Hole.
You'll drive right past it if you're intending to visit Rosedale Abbey via Chimney Bank.
About a mile before you reach Hutton-le-Hole, you'll cross the cattle-grid - your first proper indication that you've reached the sheep country of the North York Moors.
A short way further on, you'll see a lay-by on your right with a road on the left leading to the Hutton-le-Hole Caravan Park on the left.
Pull off the road on this stretch; and you'll see the three Stone-age Barrows on the horizon in the far distance in the break in the trees above the road.
And if you are intending to visit Rosedale Abbey; you might be surprised to keep an eye those burial mounds; because at the top of Chimney Bank, you can look to your left and they're right there just a couple fo hundred yards from the road.
Welcome to our ancient and mysterious land!
