How did Rosella Cottage Get its Name?

As some readers may know; a Rosella is an incredibly colourful and pretty species of Parrot found in many parts of Australia. I'll include a picture below to show how they appear in real life.

Rosella - beautiful and colourful.

So how did a 160-year old Victorian-era stone cottage in Rosedale Abbey in the North York Moors National Park (NYMNP) come to be associated with the name of an Australian bird?

There is a story behind this, so please read on!

I was brought up in the North York Moors and like many young folks over the years, I was forced by economic circumstances and the lack of employment opportunities in the area to move away in order to improve my prospects.

Movement of the young of this region has been going on for over a hundred years, with thousands of country-folk migrating to Canada in the 1880s.

But just like the thousands of other folks who've moved away for better prospects, the Moors remained in my heart.

In my case, I emigrated to Australia in 1989 with my wife.  She was 20 and I was 23. We had with us a sum of $500 and a suitcase each - and that was all our wordly goods!

But Australia was good to us; and we worked hard; and eventually raised our own family.

Our daughters - Rosa and Ella came along - and only added to our sense of achievement.

But the pull of the Moors remained strong in both our hearts.

And holidays "home" with our daughters only increased their love of the North York Moors.

Wanting to spend more time here in the Moors; and also wanting to introduce our daughters to more of our Yorkshire heritage and culture, and to all their Yorkshire relatives, we decided to buy a cottage in Rosedale.

Since the cottage is really a gift for our daughters to use when we take our holidays in Yorkshire, the name "Rosella" was just a nice fit for "Rosa" and "Ella" - Rosella Cottage.

And that's how the little stone cottage got the name of the funny-looking Australian Parrot.
