Farm Open Day 8th June 2014

Two traditonal North York Moors hill farms are opening the gate to public visitors next weekend as part of Open Farm Sunday.

The events take place on on Sunday, June 8th 2014.

And both farms are just a short drive from Rosella Cottage here in Rosedale Abbey.

Fryupdale farmers

Farmers at work in Fryupdale, location of Stonebeck Gate Farm.

Stonebeck Gate Farm is in Fryupdale - just over the Moor and only about 15-minutes to drive or an hour to cycle.

Fowl Green Farm is in Commondale which is about 10-miles away.

Both farm are hosting activities that highlight the vital role farmers play in looking after the North York Moors.

And visitors will get to see what life on a moorland farm is really like.

Stonebeck Gate Farm

Visit Stonebeck Gate Farm to see sheep dog trials, drystone walling and sheep shearing demonstrations.

Througout the day there will also be talks and information on moorland farming.

You can also see the "Robinson" collection of farm and domestic artefacts.

And you can even get some exercise with short guided walks led by National Park Authority staff and volunteers looking at the different habitats supported by the farm.

Children can meet the resident pigs, lambs and moorland sheep and can make an animal mask to take home.

Stonebeck Gate Farm (YO21 2NS) will be open from 12 – 4pm.

Fowl Green Farm

At Fowl Green Farm visitors will see craft stalls and demonstrations of sheep shearing and wool spinning.

There are also nature trails and guided walks that offer the perfect opportunity to explore moorland farming in this beautiful location near Rosedale.

I know from personal experience that visiting a farm is always a fun day out for our own children.

Refreshments will be available.
