6 Rosedale Abbey

We're enjoying our own short break at Rosella Cottage in Rosedale Abbey this early July week.
Yesterday and today have both been very pleasent days with quite a bit of sunshine yesterday but a little overcast today.
Rosa and Ella on the Path to Northdale.
One reason we purchased Rosella Cottage was that we just love the large number of walks that can be taken - literally - from the very front door. It's just so fabulous!
This morning after a lovely full-English breakfast me and our girls headed off up the valley on a short "loop" walk.
Starting from the front door of Rosella Cottage, cross the road to the Milburne Arms Hotel and head off up hill out of the village on Heygate Bank Road.
Just past the hotel, turn left and walk through the public carpark to the gate.
Go through the gate with the "public footpath" sign showing and simply walk across the field behind the village.
The footpath now follows the beck ("stream") at the valley bottom as it heads upstream.
You'll pass through several gates as you pass through a number of fields.
During our walk, there were sheep and cows in the fields. Don't bother them and they won't bother you!
Just stay close to the beck and you can't really go wrong on this walk.
After about 5 or 6 fields, you'll come to a sign post showing three directions: "Bridleway to Northdale", "Village" (pointing in the direction from which you've just come) and "Public footpath" pointing up a steep path across a small bridge over the beck.
Take the footpath uphill (with a wood and pheasent breeding place on your left).
Eventually, you'll come out on Hanging Stone Lane (a single lane tarmac track).
Turn left and walk along the track for about ten minutes.
This will bring you out on the main road ("New Road") into Rosedale Abbey at Bell End Farm (please don't giggle).
Turn left and walk downhilll and you'll arrive back into Rosedale in about 10-minutes.
Total walking time is about an hour.
It's fine and clean-going during dryer periods but can be wet in the long grass and with some muddy sections in winter.
Look out for wildlife and wild flowers: today we saw a duck and chicks, a mole, sheep and cows, pheasents, a variety of small birds, rabbits and a deer.
