Slow Paced Holiday Ideas

August holidays in Britain's tourist hotspots can be fun.

But if the crowds, noise, and prohibitive pricing in London, York, Brighton or Edinburgh are not to your taste; you might think about some of the slow-paced holiday ideas to enjoy in Rosedale Abbey.

London is Fun; But it Doesn't Make for a Relaxing Holiday!

Listed below are five of my own favourite holiday passtimes that don't require much effort; and they require even less money!

And they're all accessable right from the front door of Rosella Cottage.

So you don't even need to get in the car!

Cryptic Crossword

If relaxing is the name of the game for your holiday, there's not much to beat sitting in the sun on our patio and doing a cryptic crossword with a G+T or nice coffee for refreshment.

Our Patio is Ideal for Sitting and Doing "Nowt Much".

For background music, you'll just have the twittering birdlife that call our garden and the Churchyard beyond home.

What a great way to pass an hour or so in peace and quiet.

The Green Man

"Living in the moment" and "stop and smell the roses" are modern phrases that any Yorkshireman instinctively mistrusts.

They seem to denote ideleness rather than hard work - which is always a worry in this part of the World.

But if you really want an hour or two of "me time" (another suspect notion), there's not much to beat rolling out a towel and contemplating the wonder of the Universe under the huge Sycamore tree that provides shade to Rosedale Abbey's village green.

Green Man

Rosedale Abbey's Village Green is a Lovely Spot.

If you look at the tree long enough, you might even come to see the Green Man hiding in the folliage.

Our ancestors that made these Moors home for thousands of years certainly believed the Green Man lived in the trees.

Coffee and Cake

You'll find three fabulous Cafe's in Rosedale; all selling top-notch coffee, Yorkshire tea, and cakes and sandwiches.

Graze on the Green is Great for Breakfast or Lunch.

Graze on the Green and Abbey Stores & Cafe are in the centre of the village; and both are just a minute's stroll from Rosella Cottage.

Dale Head Tea Gardens is a little further up the valley but worth the short drive (or medium-length walk) to get there.

The view is simply stunning; and the Eldflower Cordial is a favourite with our own children.

Not Many Cafes Enjoy a View Like Dale Head Tea Gardens.

Fish for Your Dinner

There's loads of spots located around the North York Moors that welcome day fishers.

The Esk Valley is a prime Yorkshire salmon river; and trout fishing is also popular.

Lockwood beck and Scaling Dam are other near-by locations that have been popular with generations of Anglers.

Watermeadow Birdwatching

Being a river valley; and at the point where two rivers merge; we're blessed with a range of field, woodland, bog, and moorland habitat that support an array of birdlife.

Rosedale Provides a Varety of Wildlife Habitat.

And many Rosedale birds even seem to paticularly enjoy the urban habitat of the village itself - so you don't even need to get "out in the country" to spot birds.

But if you do take a walk, you might see Red Grouse, Red Kites, finches, warbles, and all manner of water birds.

You'll even find a birdbook in Rosella Cottage to assist you in putting a name to the birds you see!
