The race begins by running North along the Eastern edge of the Yorkshire Wolds before entering the North York Moors National Park at East Ayton at the mouth of the Forge Valley.

The riders will track along the Southern section of the National Park through the Great Yorkshire Forest - taking in Dalby Forest Drive - before arriving in Pickering for the first sprint section of the day.

After leaving Pickering, the Tour de Yorkshire really hits the most magnificent scenery when it turns North to run up the whole of Rosedale, through Rosedale Abbey and on to the highest climb of the day - the newly named Côte de Rosedale Abbey; rising 340m over 2.8km at seven per cent gradient.

After crossing the main Moorland watershed, the race heads downhill to the top end of Eskdale and passes through the Esk Valley villages of Castleton, Danby, Glaisdale, Egton, Grosmont, and Sleights; before reaching historic Whitby - and the second sprint section of the race.

From Whitby, the race turns Southwards to track the Yorkshire Heritage Coast through Robin Hood's Bay and to finish in Scarborough.
