6 Rosedale Abbey

Whitby is World famous for its links to many historical events and characters - Captain Cook, Caedmon, Whitby Abbey, Bram Stoker's Dracula, St Hilda, the first Synod; and even the modern TV series "Heartbeat".
But I reckon that it is probably fish and chips for which Whitby may be most famous nowadays.
And rightly so!
I've certainly never tasted better fish and chips anywhere else than those made in Whitby.
And Whitby is so close to Rosella Cottage here in Rosedale Abbey that a trip to the seaside is always on our own holiday agenda.
So, if you're heading off to Whitby from Rosedale Abbey, below is our "locals" guide to the best "chippies" in town.
Haddleys on Bridge Street.
Traditional Yorkshire fish and chip "cafe".
Unpretentious "sit-down" fish and chip cafe with proper Yorkshire hospitality.
Go for the Jumbo Haddock - a proper thick piece - not two little piecese sandwiched together.
Our family favourite in Whitby. Telephone 01947 604153
Trencher's on New Quay Road.
Upmarket and expensive - but you get what you pay for and Trencher's fish and chips are seriously good.

The Magpie on Pier Road.
A Yorkshire icon with its own Lilliput Lane scale model.
World famous and always with a long line outside.

The Royal ("Fusco's" to locals) on Baxtergate.
Top-notch take-away and cafe serving the best fish and chips since 1968.
