North Yorkshire's Best Gardens

North Yorkshire is very well catered for when it comes to beautiful gardens that are open to the public.

There are traditional formal gardens at many local stately homes, and many have lovely cafes for lunch.

And there are newly created wildflower gardens like that of the Dutch House at Krake.

Listed below are our family's favourite top five North Yorkshire gardens and all are within an easy car-drive of Rosella Cottage here in Rosedale.

Castle Howard Gardens and Arboretum

An award winning managed woodland adjacent to the magnificent stately home with its gardens and plant sales area.

There are magnificant trees, the boating lake, ponds, Greek-style temples, and a fabulous children’s play area.

Helmsley Walled Garden and Duncombe Park

In the olden-days, the Helmsley walled garden was the vegetable garden belonging to Duncombe Park House, but it was abandoned after WW1 when the house became a private girls school.

Thankfully, it has now been extensively renovated and is simply fantastic.

You'll Find Helmsley Walled Garden is Easy to Visit from Rosedale Abbey.

The flowers fruits and vegetables are beautifully landscaped.

And the Vinehouse Café is a super place for lunch - try the Elderflower Soft drink..

It's on the outskirts of Helmsley and just 20-minutes from here in Rosedale in the North York Moors.

Scampston Hall

Gardens and walled garden with restaurant and woodlands make for an interesting visit.

The Dutch House

The Dutch House in Krake - near York - is a recently created example of more natural gardening.

There are huge displays of wildflowers and interesting sculptures that punctuate the walk through the varying gardens.

Plenty of home made food in the café and regular practical craft experiences for all ages.

Burnby Hall

Acres of various habitats and styles of gardening with large lakes with a huge collection of water lilies and fish to feed by hand.
