A new exhibition at Castle Howard near Rosedale Abbey tells the haunting story of how the First and Second World Wars affected the the lives of those who lived and worked in the great North Yorkshire estate.
Mark, the eldest son, and heir to the estate was killed in action in Normandy in 1944 when he was hit in the neck by a splinter from an air burst shell.
A few months later, Christopher, Mark’s youngest brother who became a bomber pilot was also killed during a mission to bomb the Kembs Dam, close to the Swiss border.
The new exhibition, entitled "Duty Calls" tells visitors to Castle Howard all about Mark and Christopher, and about other members of the Howard family who have given their lives in time of war.
But "Duty Calls" doens't focus exclusively on the Howards.
Old photographs, letters, diaries, news reports and other documents tell the story of the impact of war on the wider Castle Howard community and the lives of those who lived and worked there.
Duty Calls opens in the exhibition room at Castle Howard on May 25, and will run until the end of 2014.
You can also visit War memorials and rolls of honour in the estate villages of Coneysthorpe, Bulmer, Welburn, Terrington and Slingsby which record the names of tenants and workers who answered the call of duty in 1914 and 1939.
