Thirsk Clays

The North Yorkshire Shooting School has been open since 1974 and is located just along the A170 and about 4-miles this side of Thirsk.  There is police approval for non-certificate holders to shoot here, so you can have a go even if you’ve never been shooting before.  Open every Wednesday and Saturday afternoon from 1pm with last entries at 4pm for open practice for anyone who is a competent shooter; otherwise please phone Mike on 07966 387 273 to book your lesson.

Danby Moor is a magnificent grouse moor of over 10,500 acres and located halfway between Rosella Cottage and Spyglass 1708.  Both High Danby Moor and Low Danby Moor have spectacular views over the surrounding countryside.  The Moors are both butted (all-stone butts) and there are lunch huts located strategically on the Moor.  Driven grouse shooting takes place from the end of August through to the beginning of November each year.  For further details, contact the Dawney Estates, who own and manage the moors.  Telephone Anne Britton on 01723 866 600.

The "Abbey Shoot" at Wykeham offers the opportunity for partridge shooting. Partridges are driven across the rolling countryside lying on the southern fringes of the North York Moors and leading down to the Parkland surrounding Wykeham Abbey.
The partridge shooting commences with a drive through the Park arriving at Wykeham Abbey. Introductions to the keepers and host take place at the "Old Kitchen" over a hot mug of coffee. The host will explain the procedures for the day and carry out the draw. There is a midmorning drink and snack out in the field followed by lunch (with a choice of menus) in the "Old Kitchen" either at lunchtime or, if preferred, at the end of the day's shooting.
Partridge Shooting season is September and October. For further details telephone Robert Sword (Estate Agent) on +44 (0)1723 866600.

The "Abbey Shoot" at Wykeham also offers “traditional" pheasant shooting.  Spectacular "High Bird" pheasant shooting is also available over three steep wooded valleys: Bedale, Yedmandale and Sawdondale.  The pheasant shoot season runs through November, December and January.  For further details telephone Robert Sword (Estate Agent) on +44 (0)1723 866600.
