Where are the North York Moors?

The North York Moors National Park is located in the hinterland of the Northeast English coast in the County of North Yorkshire. 

The National Park (just called "the Moors" by locals) contains the largest area of unbroken upland moorland in the whole of England; and comprises a number of interesting and unique "micro-environments" - each with a distinctive geology, landform, history, and culture.

On the Northeast boundary of the National Park, the high moors meet the North Sea.  The coastal area from Saltburn in the Northeast to Scarborough in the Southeast is marked by a landscape of high and dramatic sea-cliffs; interspaced with rocky headlands, sweeping bays and beautiful sandy beachs.

The cliffs at Boulby are the highest in England. The fabulous bays at Staithes, Runswich and Robin Hoods Bay are World famous for their scenary and historic links to the sea.  And you'll find the sandy beaches at Saltburn, Sandsend, Whitby and Scarborough are a delight in summer - or for bracing walks in other seasons!

In the geographical centre of the area making up the North Yorkshire Moors, you'll find the high moors with Blakey Ridge being the major watershed.  The Valley of the Esk River runs Northeastwards and down to Whitby with other dales like Danby Dale, Fryup Dale and Glaisedale joining it.

Running Southwards are other lovely deep valleys such as Rosedale and Farndale which meet the Vale of Pickering forming the Southern boundary of the Park.

All of the areas mentioned above are famous as places of beautiful countryside with fabulous opportunities for walking, cycling and general sight-seeing holidays.

The Western edge of the Moors is formed by a generally steep escarpment which drops radidly from the high ground of the moors to the flatter land of central Yorkshire before the County again turns uphill where it meets the Pennine range.

Although the Moors are "rural" and there are no large towns within the North Yorkshire Moors, the larger towns that surround the immediate area are a Mecca for visitors wanting to explore the local area.

You'll find  Scarborough to the Southeast; Malton, Pickering, and  Helmsley along the Southern boundary; Thirsk and Northallerton to the West; Stokesley and Middlesbrough to the North; and Whitby, in its spendid isolation in the Northeast corner.

Only a little further away, and within an hour or so by car you'll find Durham, York, Harrogate and the bigger cities of Leeds and Sheffield.

Taken together, the scenary, history, local towns and villages, our cultural heritage and the people that live on the Moors make this area unique.
