The Edwardian seaside town of Saltburn is a very pleasent 40-minute drive from Rosedale Abbey across the spine of the North York Moors.
And Saltburn is a very pleasent place to pay a visit.
Surfer's at Sunset on Saltburn Sands.
Our family have strong links to the town. Our Grandparents, Mother and several Aunties were all born there. So was I and most of my own brothers and sister - at the Overdene "Baby Hospital" (now sadly closed-down).
Our Grandfather was the head gardener in the Town and was provided with a home in the middle of Saltburn cemetary. My Mother was actually born in the cemetary - which is a little odd!
My Father was enlisted into the Royal Armoured Corp during WWII when he was one of the first of several-hundred recruits to put a bicycle bell together at a recruitment session at the Zetland Hotel.
As he used to say, the fellows who couldn't manage to put that bell together ended-up fighting the Germans in the PBI ("poor bloody infantry").
As a teenager at Sixth-form College, I even met the first love of my life there - at the old Philamore's Disco - but enough of that!
Anyway, back to Saltburn! You'll find that a visit to the town offers many rewards.
There's an interesting cliff-lift to get from the town down to the beach.
Saltburt Cliff Lift and Pier.
And the fish and chips down on "the front" are fabulous - and even better if you're lucky enough to eat them outdoors - while watching the surfers battle the waves.
I'd also recommend a walk along Saltburn Sands or up the Valley Gardens which are also very pleasent if you catch the weather right.
The old Saltburn Pier is still defying the North Sea and also makes for a bracing walk.
Up in the town itself, the high-street is pleasent with some nice shopping available.
So it's easy enough to spend a good half-day exploring all that is on offer in Saltburn.
And the return scenic drive across the high North York Moors is a final reward for a great day of sight-seeing on the coast.
