Autumn Before the Clocks Go back

The North York Moors return to their quiet and brooding best each Autumn between September and the end of British Summer Time in late October.

The Moorland scenery is dominated by the Autumn colour-palette of browns, rusts and grey-green.

The summer visitors have returned home now, and Autumn is the season to take advantage of the cultural heritage of the Moors and surrounding Yorkshire countryside.

The magnificent dissolute Monasteries and thier spendid tree-fillled gardens at Rievaulx, Whitby, and Bylands are fabulous for a day-visit in Autumn.

And the great stone Castles at Scarborough, Pickering, and Helmsley come into their own in Autumn.

Other attractions for a visit in Autumn include Castle Howard or Nunnington Hall on the Howardian Hillas - an Area of Outstanding Naturally beauty (AONB); Ryedale Folk Museum at Hutton-le-Hole, or the majestic City of York.

Autumn is also a great time to get out walking on the North York Moors.

It's also an ideal time for a cycling break as there is not so much traffic on the already-quiet country roads around Rosedale.

Whatever your reason for visiting the North York Moors in Autumn, Rosella Cottage makes a super base from which to explore this part of North Yorkshire.
