If you come to the North York Moors for a walking holiday in Winter but are unprepared for heavy snowfall, it doesn't mean you have to cancell your hiking.
If your boots aren't quite up to snowy conditions, there are still measures you can take to get the most out of your walking holiday on the Moors.
Winter Conditions Pose a Unique Challenge to Hikers on the North York Moors.
This tip is just an extention of the "two-sock" technique which many people - including me - use to prevent blistering of the underside of the feet.
Start by putting on your thin "liner" socks onto your feet in the ususal fashion.
But then place a light plastic bag over each sock.
Next, place your thicker outer socks over the plastic bags.
Each plastic bag creates a moisure barrier that prevents the sweat from your feet from making the thicker outer sock damp.
Note that so-called "breathable socks" will never provide the same benefit.
The benefit this provides is that it prevents the dampness on the outer sock from transmitting the cold from the outside of the boot onto the surface of your feet.
Your inner socks will become damp inside the plastic bag, but they will stay warm as the outer sock which is dry will prevent cold from colling them off.
And a quick wash of your inner socks and feet at the end of the day will have both feeling fresh for the next day's hike on the North York Moors.
