Quintessential North Yorkshire Holiday Activities

Listed below are some quintessential Yorkshire holiday activities that you'll enjoy during a summer break in Rosedale Abbey in the North York Moors.

1.  Visit to the seaside.  The Yorkshire Heritage Coast boasts some beautiful beaches; from wild and windswept to peaceful bays. Beach-lovers fill the coast from Saltburn to Filey; especially in summer when temperatures are at their best.  Saltburn, Sandsend, Whitby and Robin Hoods Bay are our favourites.

2.  A visit to a Stately Home.  Yorkshire folk love to poke around Stately Homes.  We have several homes near-by to Rosedale; and Castle Howard is probably the best in the whole of England.  And it's just a few miles by car from Rosedale Abbey.

3   A good walk.  We do all love a good walk don't we?  And what could be better than walking in Rosedale or hiking across the North York Moors National Park?  Rosella Cottage is located in the largest expanse of open-Moorland in England and "walkers are welcome".

4.  A romantic journey by train.  Virtually on our doorstep, we have the Esk Valley line running "standard" modern trains through the heart of the North York Moors and on towards Whitby.  We then have the North York Moors Steam Railway from Pickering to Grosmont.  This is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Yorkshire.  As we say around here; "a grand day out".

5.  A visit to a Cathedral.  We have lots of historical religeous buildings in this part of North Yorkshire.  But most of them were knocked down by Henry VIII.  Still, those parts of Whitby Abbey, Rieveaux Abbey, or Fountains Abbey which remain are lovely enough.  For a visit to a surviving Cathedral, York Minster takes some beating.

6.  Visit a University Town.  Our best local University towns are York or Durham - both about an hour away by car from Rosedale.  And both are historical and scenic, with Cathedrals, Castles, city walls, and lovely rivers running through them.

7.  Take in a Music Festival.  Our local summer music festival takes place in Dalby Forest and this year (Friday 28th June 2013) is headlined by Blondie.  We also have the North York Moors Chamber Orchestra Festival which takes place in August 2013.

8.  Watch a game of village cricket.  Nearly all the villages in the North York Moors possess a village cricket team (or two), and they'll all take part in our local evening leagues each summer.  Very relaxing to watch on a warm summer evening.

9.  Agricultural shows and village fairs.  Any village in the North York Moors that is worth its salt has a summer agricultural show.  The "show" will typically include livestock displays, pet shows, farm produce, old farm machinery, raffles, food stalls, arts and crafts, music, and a beer tent for the thirsty!  Our's in Rosedale Abbey takes place on 17th August 2013.

10. Beer garden on a summer evening.  Enough said really!  Our three locals - the White Horse, Coach House, and Blacksmiths - in Rosedale all have very pleasent beer gardens with grand views and offering good food.
