Driving to Staithes

A drive over the high moors and down to the Heritage Coast at Staithes is a joy.

Pronounced "Steers" by locals; Staithes is today a quiet and unspoilt fishing community; but like many others - dependent on the summer tourist trade for its livelihood.

Staithes Cats Cradle - Mike Nicholas

Cobbles (distingtive Yorkshire fishing boats) behind Cow Bar at Staithes.

But once upon a time, Staithes was one of the most important fishing ports in the whole of England.

Today, as always, you'll find Staithes is tucked in a narrow valley between the high red sandstone cliffs along the coast; and protected by the natural headland of "Cow Bar" from the nasty Northerly winds.

There is one extremely steep and winding cobbled road that winds its way down from the surrounding countryside and into the village to the sea front where you'll find the old Cod and Lobster pub.

Not  a bad spot for some lunch before a walk in the little bay or along the short piers.
