For fisher-folk, the benefit of the North York Moors is that they act like a super absorbing sponge when it rains.
All the moss, peat and heather makes for a huge water trap that holds billions of tons of water.
And it then slowly releases the water to keep the Moorland rivers flowing.
Even in the very hottest and dryest of years, Rivers like the Esk and the Rye continue to flow steadily, even high up near the top of the moors in Rosedale, Farndale and around Castleton in Eskdale.
So anglers always have the opportunity to fish the smaller trout streams on the Moors surrounding Rosedale Abbey.
The pick of the bunch are the Rye and the Esk.
Both the Rye and Esk are fed by many smaller tributaries, streams and rivers which run in from the top of the moors and down through the vales and dales.
The two rivers have almost the whole North York Moors serving as a catchment area.
After heavy rain the Rye and Esk can both rise fairly quickly.
They stay coloured and deep for a week or two and therfore difficult to get in and fish.
But any time that our local rivers aren't a raging torrent they tend to fish very well.
And their tributatries and feeder streams settle back down to a fishable height within a day or so of having no rain.
