Heaven's Above the Moors

One of the remarkable and distinctive qualities of the North York Moors is the very "big sky" we have here.

It is so distinctive that guests from other parts of Britain often leave comments in our visitor's book about it.

It must be something to do with the height and the gentle rolling nature of the high moors; together with the relative lack of trees on the higher ground.

But whatever it is, it means we seem to have more than our fair share of beautiful sunrises and sunsets; amazing cloud formations; and a simply breathtaking night sky.

The latter quality is a result of the rural nature of the North York Moors National Park; and the fact that there are no larger towns located towards the centre of the moors around Rosedale Abbey.

The lack of man-made ambient light makes for a brilliant star-show on cloudless nights.

Shown below are some more examples of sunsets which have been taken from various places around the Moors in the last few days.

They just go to show that a visit to the Moors - even in November - can be a rewarding and enriching experience.
