Free Holiday Ideas for the NYM NP

Yorkshire Folk are notoriously "careful" with thier cash.

And  all professional Yorkshiremen enjoy the idea of getting "something for nothing".  We call it "somert for nowt" around these parts of the North York Moors.

And there are certainly plenty of completely free but unique  holiday activities to be had when holidaying in Rosedale Abbey in the heart of the North York Moors.

Listed below are a few of our favourite free holiday pastimes.

1.  Ascending the the 199-steps to visit the Whitby Abbey plain and take in the marvelous view over the historic old seaport and Yorkshire Heritage Coastline.

2.  Walking around the old ironstone hauling railway cinder track in upper Rosedale.  The walking path starts from our front door here in Rosedale Abbey and is an easy day walk on a mostly level gradient around the valley.

3.  Our kids love rock-pooling at Staithes, Runswick Bay or Robin Hood's Bay on the Yorkshire Heritage Coastline.  You'll love it too because you never know what the tide will bring to you each time.

4.  Walking along the 1,200 year-old genuine Roman road - known locally as "Wades Causeway" (at Goathland).

5. Visiting any of the  beautiful Moorland churches in the villages close by to Rosedale Abbey.  The Church in Pickering is particularly striking due to its unique surviving medeaval wall paintings.

6.  We love to visit Ralph's Cross on Blakey Ridge and watch the sunset from this 360° panaramic vista.

7.  The early morning or evening scenic drive or cycle tour from Rosedale to Hutton-le-Hole, Castleton, Danby Castle, Fryupdale and back to Rosedale is a real treat.  It's a beautiful and scenic route across the high moors and fertile valleys; and each village has it's own unique character.  There are also many unique watering holes along the way to take on board extra supplies!

8.  Ride your bike up Chimney Bank in Rosedale Abbey.  It's the steepest public road in all of England.

9.  Get close to nature with some bird or wildlife watching in Rosedale or across the wider North York Moors.  There's plenty of wldlife to be seen.

10.  Laze about in the comfortable king-size bed in Rosella Cottage and read a good book; or cuddle up to a friend.  Either way, it's a winning combination!
