6 Rosedale Abbey

Just like Bristol, the valley of Rosedale in the North York Moors National Park has a River Seven flowing through it.
Our local River Seven flows in a generally South-easterly direction along the full length of Rosedale; starting in the wild uploads at the north-western end of the dale at Rosedale Head.
It then flows through the steep-sided valley with some impressive industrial ruins from the iron-stone mining industry past.
The Seven then passes by Rosella holiday-cottage in the village of Rosedale Abbey.
Interestingly, it is joined by the North Gill at Rosedale Abbey, and this tributary actually runs completely under the centre of the village in an old tunnel built by mine-workers to give the village more space.
The original stone "out-houses" belonging to Rosella Cottage actually sit directly above the stone tunnel and the river below!
At this stage the river runs through an area of gentle fields and small woods and copses; before becoming wilder once again towards this South-eastern end of the valley.
The River Seven is then hard against the western edge of the large Forest of Cropton.
It finally opens-out of Rosedale as it joins the Vale of Pickering near Sinnington. It eventually exists the North York Moors National Park and then flows southwards to join the River Rye.
Unfortunately, the River Seven in Rosedale doesn't serve walkers particularly well; there are not many stretches of footpaths besides the river.
But fortunately, one foot path does run north from Rosella Cottage in Rosedale Abbey and on towards Thorgill Farm.
There is also a foot path along the river bank in the area to the North of Sinnington.
Named Tributaries on the River Seven include the following:
Cross Gill;
Reeking Gill;
North Gill;
Cold Beck;
Thor Gill;
Gill Beck;
Northdale Beck;
Hartoft Beck;
Lastingham Beck; and
Cropton Beck.
