You'll arrive along the ancient arrow-straight Roman road; it is nowadays a broad Stray where the Beech trees create a bright green tunnel of light each Spring and Summer.
You'll drive or cycle through the mock fortifications and the gatehouse's.
And then you'll reach the famous Obelisk erected in 1714 by Charles Howard at the height of the Napoleonic-era fashion for all things Egyptian.
It was capped with a golden ornementation in 2,000AD to mark the start of the new Millenium.
As a North Yorkshire tourist draw-card, over 250,000 people visited Castle Howard in 2013.
Castle Howard is the Setting for many Movies & Period Drama's.

From Rosella Cottage here in Rosedale Abbey, you'll need to take the Chimney Bank road across Spaunton Moor to Hutton-le-Hole and then onwards to Kirkbymoorside.
Take the A170 from Kirkbymoorside and head towards Helmsley.
About a mile outside Kirkby, turn left at the signpost for Welburn and Slingsby.
Drive through Slingsby and straight ahead at the B1257 cross roads.
You'll arrive at Castle Howard a little further on.
Castle Howard makes a great day out if the weather is a little inclement during your holiday; since you can spend much of your visit indoors!
