Walking in Rosedale is Good for the Soul

Some people think that the ability to talk is Homo-sapiens' greatest achievement.  And pronouncing "mama" or "doggy" before your first birthday is all very well.

But I reckon that walking is our first really great achievement - both individually and as a Species.

By taking our first steps, we become full members of the human race.

Walking upright and surveying our environment is what sets us apart; and individually, this ability to walk allows us to take charge of our own destiny.

So I'm in agreement with Prince Charles when he recently said that he considers walking a great consolation and release, and a vital aid to thought.

The simple act of walking can also be a very radical activity.

The Ramblers have shown how walking can be a socially-conscious challenge to the power of government and large land owners.

The Jarrow Marchers also showed how walking can be used as a form of protest.

So maybe it is no real surprise that the British people are great walkers; and with a history of exploration by foot. 

Consider the exploits of Captain Scott, or Dr Livingstone and Stanley in Africa.  All men who enjoyed a good walk!

I find a day without a decent walk is a constricting thing.

A week without a proper walk is unbearable.

I think it is because it is just hard not to be happy when having a really good walk.

And a walk is one of the only occasions when British people relax our social-norms and smile and say "hello" to strangers.
