A Lovely Walk to a Great Pub

If you've been following my posts throughout February 2014, you'll have noticed I've been visiting historic Inns across the North York Moors; and that most of our pubs offer great opportunities for walking, cycling, or side-visits to interesting historic locations.

Carrying on the theme today is a pub at the end of a great walk for holidaymakers staying in Rosedale Abbey.

I'm talking about the Crown Inn in near-by Hutton-le-Hole.

Hutton Le Hole Sign

Hutton-le-Hole is One of the Jewel's of the North York Moors.

Getting there requires a walk of about 90-minutes (3-hours return) or a return cycle-ride of about an hour.

The Crown, Hutton-le-Hole

The Crown is another traditional North York Moors country pub with a charming village-centre location.

Like most pubs round these parts, the Crown serves great pub food and real Ales.

The Crown Hutton Le Hole

The Crown is an Attractive Pub in the Village Centre.

And it's a particularly nice spot to sit outside on the village green and watch the World go by on a warm spring or summer day.

They also have a small site behind the pub for caravans and motorhomes.

For further details, contact the Crown by telephoning 01751 417343.

Getting to the Crown

Getting to the Crown from Rosedale Abbey is half the fun.

You can simply drive to the Crown (postcode = YO62 6UA) from Rosedale Abbey in about ten-minutes, if that takes your fancy.

Head-off straight up Chimney Bank from the village and out across Spaunton Moor.

Turn left at the Y-junction and you'll arrive in Hutton-le-Hole with the Crown on your left.

But for the more adventurous - it's best to either cycle or walk there.

Like the drivers, you need to get to the top of Chimney Bank first.

That takes a bit of lung-bursting effort!

Once you reach the top of the bank its downhill nearly all the way.

Cyclists can continue along the road (as per the driving instructions above) but walkers should take the footpath on the left through the green barrier and head-off across the Moor towards Ana Howe Cross in the distance.

Aine Howe Snow

The Footpath to Ana Howe Under Winter Snowfall.

From Ana Howe Cross, follow the well-defined and firm-underfoot path across the Moor as it descends towards Lastingham.

Just before entering the village, take the footpath to the right which leads you along the valley and into Hutton-le-Hole.

Things to do in Hutton-Le-Hole

After a visit to the Crown, it is worth a walk around the pretty village to take in the sights and sounds.

The village green is very pretty and the stream flowing through the middle of the village is always popular with our own children.

The Green & Stream in Hutton-le-Hole are Fabulous in Summer.

You must make sure to pay a visit to the Ryedale Folk Museum; located just a few houses down from the Crown.

This is an award-winning outdoor museum which is home to a number of re-built historic North York Moors properties.

It's like a village within a village and is totally fabulous!

Aine How Cross Rosedale

The Walk Back to Rosedale is Nearly All Uphill.

But Save some energy for the walk back to Rosedale Abbey - it is nearly all uphill from Hutton-le-Hole!

Warning!

Do not attempt to drive or cycle up or down Chimney Bank in wintery conditions.  The bank is the steepest public road in England, with a gradient of 1:3 (or 33% as our European neighbours would prefer).  It is both very steep; and prone to icing.  You will almost certainly crash.  Beyond that, you'll either die or just look like an idiot!
