If you're looking for a nice walk to burn off some of those extra Christmas calories, then Byland Abbey is the perfect place to stop off on a day out around the North York Moors.

In its day Byland Abbey was one of the greatest monasteries in England.

As a truly outstanding example of early gothic architecture, Byland Abbey inspired the design of church buildings throughout the North of England, including the design of the famous York Minster rose window.

On a visit to this English Heritage location, you can walk round the ruined Abbey and take in the beautiful West frontage, with its ruined great rose window; the lane between the cloister and west range with its row of 35 niche seats; and the Romanesque and pointed gothic arches of the Great Naive.

There is also an interesting museum with archaelogical finds from the Abbey.

The Museum offers a range interpretation panels to inform you about the Abbey and you'll get a fascinating insight into what monastic life in North Yorkshire was like all those years ago.

Byland Abbey is about 30-minutes drive from Rosedale Abbey here in the heart of the North York Moors National Park.

It's located at Coxwold, (postcode for GPS = YO61 4BD) to the South of Helmsley.

Adult admission is £4.50; Children aged 5-15 years are £2.70.

The Abbey is closed on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, but for opening times for other dates in 2014, please telephone 01347 868614.
