6 Rosedale Abbey

On of the nicest things for holidaymakers and weekenders staying at Rosella Cottage in Rosedale in the North York Moors is that there are more than a dozen easy walks of 1-2 hours duration right from the doorstep.
So they're nice walks to undertake on a spring or summer evening if you're not quite as fit as you used to be; or if you're walking with younger children and don't want to go too far from 'home'.
Looking Down on Rosedale Abbey.
And without too much planning, each walk can be arranged to end right at the beer garden of one of our local watering holes for much deserved refreshments.
All of the local walks around Rosedale also share beautiful views of the surrounding Moors and countryside.
Written-up below is one of our own favourites - a two hour 'loop' that takes you to Thorgill and then up onto the Moors to return via the White Horse Farm Hotel on Chimney Bank.
Turn right from the front door of Rosella Cottage and walk through the village to the bottom of Chimney Bank.
Cross the bridge over the River Seven and head down the path at the side of the cottages in front of you on the corner.
Go up the steep steps, and then straight up-hill across the grassy field.
At the top when you reach the road, turn right.
Just follow the road until you reach Thorgill.
Follow the public footpath to the left through Thorgill that takes you up on to the Moor above the little hamlet.
The path starts off quite distinctively, but becomes less obvious has you rise-up.
Don't worry, just keep going upwards and you'll soon-enouch reach the old cinder-bed railway line (abandonded so don't worry about trains).
Turn left onto the railway line and the walk will bring you back to the top of Chimney Bank.
Turn left and head downhill towards Rosedale Abbey in the valley bottom.
About two-thirds of the way downhill is the White Horse Farm Hotel on the right.
