Richmond to Muker (Swaledale)

A Four

Distance: 21 Miles.

Time Taken: 11 hours.

Weather: Warm with sunny periods.

Richmond

Richmond is by far the Nicest Town on the Whole Coast-to-Coast Route.

The Walk

Day four - for me - was just the best day of the whole walk.

Starting off from Richmond on a beautiful clear summer morning, the route out of town is easy to find and the map reading is minimal as the path just winds its way up Swaledale.

The Yorkshire scenery on day 4 is just smashing!

I walked the first half of today to arrive at Reethe in time for lunch.

At Reethe, the Coast-to-Coast splits into two routes - a high route over the tops - or a low route through the valley.

Because of the painful blisters I'd developed on Day 3, I opted for the low route!

Wildflower meadows

The Pathway Through Beautiful Wildflower Meadows.

I loved the walk through the wild flower meadows of upper-Swaledale; and was particularly pleased to revisit Gunnerside for the first time in 30-years.  For the two years I was taking my A-levels at Prior Pursglove College in Guisborough, I used to regularly visit the College's cottage above Gunnerside for Geology and Geography field-trip weekends. Happy days they were too!

At the start of the day, I had intended to make it all the way to Keld; but fatigue from a couple of hot days plus the pain of blistered feet meant I was happy to stop for the night when I reached the pretty village of Muker.

Upper Swaledale 1

Scenic Upper Swaledale.

A big steak for dinner, a few pints, and a couple of nice single malts at the Farmers Arms really hit the spot before bedtime!

armoured car

I'm Not Really Sure Why an Armoured Car is Parked in Swaledale?
