A Day Out in Saltburn

Saltburn-by-the-Sea is a lovely little Edwardian-era seaside resort on the coast alongside the North York Moors.  In a nice way, you'll wonder if time stood still in Saltburn.

Saltburn Pier at Night.

The town was built by a steel magnate from Teeside who had a religeous revelation about a shining white city. So he created Saltburn and had its fascinating architecture constructed from unique creamy-white bricks on the cliff above the North Sea.

Even today, it gleams on a sunny summer day - a little like the Sydney Opera House - only much more impressive.  This being Yorkshire!

Nowadays, it's a little forgotton.  Always genteel, but perhaps a little down-at-heel.

But with its unique 1880s cliff lift, pier, sandy beach, and hip-surfers, it is well worth a visit.

You'll feel like you're in a time-warp because it's so unspoilt.

Plus you can purchase postcards in Saltburn which were produced before the Yanks put a man on the moon.  How's that for unique?

And Saltburn is also a unique and odd mix of old and young; with pensioners sitting on benches reminising about dancing at the Spa; and surfer-dudes catching the breaks which they say are up there with those found in Cornwall.

It really is worth the drive to Saltburn from Rosedale just to ride on the cliff lift, and walk to along the Pier.  It's the most Northerly one in Britain, however,  so you might need a jumper!

The cliff lift is also the oldest waterbalance lift of its type surviving in Britain.

And it is fascinating to hear the water flowing backwards and forwards as it rises and descends from the "top prom" to the "bottom prom".

You'll never have so much fun for just 60p.  And entry to the Pier is free!

And with the beach, the surfers, the pier, the fish and chips, and a walk on the bracing sands, it is easy to get lost for a few hours in Saltburn.

Saltburn is a well-kept holiday secret.  I hope you enjoy its unique and distinctive charms.
