If you're living near Sunderland, why not take advantage of a weekend leading up to Christmas and take a quick break to the peace and quiet of the North York Moors?

It's so easy; you can drive from Sunderland to the Moors and feel a million miles from home in about an hour.

Where to Stay?

Rosedale Abbey - in the heart of the Moors - has a special feeling at this time of year; and with three historic Inns in the Valley, there's plenty going on to keep visitors from Sunderland happy during a winter weekend break.

Rosella Cottage is handily-located right in the heart of the village.

Good Places to Eat

From here, you can have a great Saturday evening dining experience at the Star Inn in near-by Harome.

It's a Michelin-starred eatery.

And for Sunday lunch, try the White Horse Farm Inn - it's right here in the village.

It was voted to be Yorkshire's favourite pub in 2012.

What is there to do?

On fine weekends, why not get some really fresh Moorland air with a hike around the 10-miles of the Rosedale Mineral Railway.

There are great views, and you can call in to North Yorkshire's remotest pub - The Lion on Blakey Ridge - for refreshments half way round.

If the weather is not so good, spend a magnificant day indoors at Ryedale  Folk Museum in near-by Hutton-le-Hole.
