What is a Moorland Pinfold?

You've probably heard of the term "pound" - used in the context of a "dogpound" by your local Council for the housing of stray or abandoned dogs.

In the context of animals, the term "pound" comes from the Anglo-Saxon word "pund"; and on the North York Moors we have several examples of what are called Pinfolds ("pundfolds") for housing lost or wandering livestock.

In times past, the local Bailiff would place wandering cows, sheep, or pigs in the village Pinfold and await the arrival of the owner; who would have to pay a fine to get back their animal!

Pinfold

The Hutton-le-Hole Pinfold Has a Classic Yorkshire Circular Design.

The National Park Authority has recently saved a decaying Grade II listed Pinfold in the village of Osmotherly on the edge of the Moors.

And visitors to Rosedale Abbey can get a closer look at a local Pinfold in near-by Hutton-le-Hole.

Hutton's Pinfold is a circular design construction dating from the 17th Century and located just before your reach the village's main street coming from Moor Lane from Rosedale or Lastingham.

It's on the grass opposite the public car park and well worth a look for its historical and cultural value.
