Boxing Day Walk in Rosedale

Boxing day is a perfect day to get out and about on the North York Moors to walk off some of the "Christmas cheer" consumed yesterday.

And with a sunny day forecast and a cool temperature of 0°C to 3°C; the Moors will be crisp and frosty; and ideal for walking.

A favourite and relatively flat all-weather walk is offered by the Rosedale Mineral railway.

Bog Walking

Try a Hike on the North York Moors this Christmas.

This long-abandoned cinder track is firm-underfoot and runs 10-miles around the sides of Rosedale; with great views over the Dale and towards the Vale of Pickering to the South.

Start from Rosedale Abbey; or take the short drive to the top of Chimney Bank if you don't fancy the hard slog uphill.

Bank Top Cottages

Looking South Over bank Top Cottages and Rosedale.

The walk takes you right past the old Calcinating kilns and cottages at Bank Top, onwards past the 250' deep hole in the Moor at Sherrif's Pit, round Reeking Ghyll, and then past the Eastside mines and more Calcinating kilns.

It's a fascinating walk into our industrial past.

Give it a go this Boxing day.

Calcinating Kiln East Side

Enormous East Mines Calcinating Kilns.
