May Beck & Falling Foss

Boots small

Just a short drive from Rosedale Abbey, visitors staying in the village can walk to the fabulously-named Midge Hall and take the woodland path alongside May Beck to Falling Foss .

Foss ("Fors") is an old Norse word for "waterefall" introduced when the Vikings invaded the North Yorkshire coast over 1,000 years ago.

Midge Hall isn't really a hall; in fact it was originally built as a lowly game-keepers cottage in the deep woods.

But after falling to rack-and-ruin in the 1960s, the cottage was saved by new owners; and it is now a welcoming tea garden for people visiting May Beck Woods, the Hermitage and Falling Foss waterfall.
