Why is Rosedale Abbey Special?

Local distinctiveness and a sense of place are really what attract most of our visitors to Rosedale Abbey and the wonderful area in the surrounding North York Moors National Park.

Our local distinctiveness is what makes Rosedale and the high-moors different from any other place in Britain.

It’s our essential details, large and small, natural and man-made which combine to create our  “sense of place” in Rosedale and across the moors.

Local distinctiveness is in our big landmarks and the famous sights of the area - Roseberry Topping, Blakey Ridge, the Jurassic Coastline, Eskdale and Rosedale itself; but it is also in the small details that you'll love once you notice them.

You'll love the wildlife and flowers you'll see; you'll love the man-made features - buildings, heritage, culture, traditions – and the people, events, markets and local festivals across the seasons.

Our "sense of place" in the North York Moors also comes from the produce and industry you'll find in the area - the local food, drink, local artisan crafts, our ways of hill farming; and don't forget the sheep and spring-lambs you'll see everywhere on the moors.  They're quite unique!

But more than those things, Rosedale is defined by the people who make this place home - the words you'll hear, our valley dialect, local sayings, jokes and quirky anecdotes you'll hear in the local pubs.

So, our aim is to help you to understand more, to experience more and in different ways and to meet "real" local people here in Rosedale.

And we hope our website will help you to understand and appreciate the essential character of Rosedale and the wider area.

We want you to stop rushing around on your holidays. After all, isn't that the point of a "break"?

We're encouraging you to just slow down and relax.  Unwind and soak up a different pace.

But we also want you to find the undiscovered gems - and we have plenty of places that are special but often hidden or not so obvious to regular tourists.

We want you to have a different holiday experience.

Most of all, we want you to feel a part of the Rosedale community and discover why we love it so much.
