Make for a Rosedale Abbey Pub

The UK has seen a marked decline in pub numbers.

Since 1980, the country has lost 21,000 pubs; down from 69,000 to just 48,000 pubs today.

In fact, there are now more supermarkets in Britain than pubs.

There are a variety of causes leading to the loss of pubs. They include:

+  Supermarkets selling cheap alcohol;

+  The ban on smoking;

+  Increasing rents, rates and costss;

+  The rise in duty and VAT; and

+  And the amount of beer we all drink has declined substantially as well.

We're down from around 29 million pints of beer per day in 1980 to just 11 million pints per day in 2014.

But new research from Northumbria University in Newcastle has illustrated how pubs are good for sense of community in our towns and villages.

The study in 2,800 parishes over a 10-year period found that those areas which had a pub enjoyed a greater sense of social cohesion and that there was more likely to be local football or cricket teams, charity fundraising events and branches of the Scouts and Brownies.

And the good news is that for those pubs that survive, many are flourishing.

Plus, the number of small brewers has grown substantially and the quality of beer at most pubs is much better.

Holidaymakers to the village of Rosedale Abbey will still find three high quality pubs right here in the village.

These are the Coach House Inn, the Milburn Arms Hotel, and the White Horse Farm.

And just a little way down the valley you'll discover the Blacksmiths Arms Inn as well.

All four local pubs are traditional Yorkshire Inns; serving good food, good beer, and with nice beer gardens for warmer days.

And all welcome chldren and visitors accompanied by well-behaved pet dogs.
