Cycling the North York Moors

The North York Moors are well known as a marvelous mountain biking holiday destination.

There are certainly lots of options for keen MTB'ers to get out and about on the Moors around Rosedale.

For starters, we have Dalby - "The Great Yorkshire Forest" - with over 80 kms of bike trails; ranging from easy beginner and family rides right through to extreme cross country routes used for the Mountain Bike World Cup in 2011.

Also close-by for holidaymaking cyclists in Rosedale is the Newbrdige Park cycle loop near Pickering Castle.

It's just ten miles away from Rosella Cottage and offers a cross-country loop for keen Mountain Bikers.

Guisborough Forest also offers two cycle routes through the woods; a moderately difficult route and a "severe" route for more experienced riders.

Opened for the first time last summer (2013) is the new cycling centre at the National Park Centre above Sutton Bank.

There is an on-road and bridleway network making the area around the cycling centre fantastic to explore and discover.

The High North Yorks Moors are a 'Mecca' for Cyclists.

For the more adventurous riders, you can also take-on the 150-mile Moor to Sea cycle route that crosses the North York Moors.

The route links the towns of Pickering, Whitby and Scarborough and passes right past the front door of Rosella Cottage here in Rosedale Abbey.

The Moor to Sea Route is constructed around 11 day-length sections; so you can develop your own itinerary based on your  time available and your starting point.

Another great route for off-roaders is te 21-mile cinder track between Whitby and Scarborough on the Yorkshire Heritage Coast.

The route follows the abandoned rail way line between the towns and offers a lovely way to explore the picturesque village of Robin Hood's Bay and the coastline at the edge of the North York Moors.

And best of all - in our view - is the other abandoned cinder-track route - around Rosedale which offers excellent riding for anyone staying in Rosedale Abbey.
