Experts from around the World will gather in York this month (January 2013) to discuss the mystery of the Gold and Sapphire Ring discoved in Escrick, North Yorkshire.

The mysteries of the unique sapphire ring have baffled Yorkshire archaeology experts because nothing has ever been found like it before.

The ring was certainly worn by someone of very high status; but whether they were male or female, and during which period they lived, remains unclear.

Its intricate design, style and the material used makes it hard to date – meaning it can't be placed in any historical context or give clues to its origins or possible owner.

So the University of York and the Yorkshire Museum have invited leading experts from across the country to come and see the ring up close and share their thoughts.

A specialist Jeweller who has produced a replica of the ring will also attend to share his knowledge on the skills used to remake it and how this might compare to the original craftsmen.

The nationally important gold ring was found by metal detectorist Michael Greenhorn in 2009.

The Yorkshire Museum has raised £35,000 to buy the ring and it is currently on display in the Museum.

And as always, a drive to York from Rosedale Abbey, and a visit to York Museum is always a great day out for locals and holiday-makers alike.
