Things to do for Free from Rosedale

Yorkshire Folk are notoriously "canny" with cash; and that's no different when it comes to holidays.

Every professional Yorkshireman loves the idea of getting "somert for nowt"!  (That's "something for nothing" if you're not from around here).

So with that in mind, here are ten completely free (or next to nowt) - but unique - holiday experiences to be had when holidaying on the North York Moors.

1.  Walk along a 1,200 year-old genuine Roman road (at Goathland).

2.  Climb up and down the the 199-steps to Whitby Abbey and see if you get the magic number in each direction.  Don't forget to look at the marvelous view as you ascend.

3.  Take a hike around upper Rosedale on the old ironstone hauling railway cinder track.  You can access the walk right from our front door here in Rosedale Abbey.

4.  Go rock-pooling at any of our local lovely bays - at Staithes, Runswick Bay or Robin Hood's Bay.  You never know what the tide will bring to you each time.  And unlike the National Lottery - everyone who rock-pools is a winner in the happiness stakes.

Rockpooling Along the Yorkshire Heritage Coast is always a fun - and free - holiday experience.

5. Visit a Church in any of our beautiful Moorland settings.  Rosedale Abbey, Castleton, Danby, Egton and Hutton-le-Hole all have lovely old churches that are open for visitors every day.  The Church in Pickering is particularly striking due to its unique surviving medieaval wall paintings.

6.  Make an evening scenic drive tour from Rosedale to Hutton-le-Hole, Castleton, Danby Castle, Fryupdale and back to Rosedale.  It's a beautiful and scenic route across the high moors and fertile valleys; and each village has it's own unique character - and not to mention a few unique watering holes along the way!

7.  Park at Ralph's Cross on Blakey Ridge and watch the sunset from this 360° panaramic vista.  On a good day you can see to York over 50-miles away.

8.  Try to ride your bike up Chimney Bank in Rosedale Abbey.  It's the steepest section of public road in the whole of England.  Cycle back down and have a well-earned pint at the White Horse Farm Hotel - with lovely views over Rosedale and Rosedale Abbey.  Admittedly, the pint will cost a couple of quid!

9.  Watch the surfers in action from the bottom promenade at Saltburn-by-the-Sea.  Saltburn is now known as Yorkshire's finest surfing break and there's usually at least a few mad folks in the water.

10.  Laze about in the comfortable king-size bed in Rosella Cottage and read a good book; or cuddle up to a friend.  Either way, it's a winning combination!
