Best Sunday Lunch on the Moors

cycling small

Today I'm writing about a pub where you could be lucky twice-over.

Your first bit of luck is just to turn-up and enjoy some fab home-cooked food or real Ale in a nice pub with great atmosphere.

For my money; they do the best Sunday Lunch anywhere on the North York Moors.

But your second bit of luck could be to buy the pub! (More on this later).

Moors Inn Sign

There's a Lovely Painting on the Sign Outside - With the Original Inside.

The Moors Inn

Originally called the Oddfellows Arms; but changed to the "Moors Inn" by previous owners who just happened to be called Mr and Mrs Moor!

So it's not named after the North York Moors; or even Appleton-le-Moors.

It's just a common old  surname - you couldn't make this up!

Moors Inn

Like the Rest of Appleton, The Moors Inn is Constructed of Lovely Local Stone.

The Moors Inn today, is a lovely example of what a North York Moors pub should be all about.

It's got a lovely cosy bar room with a roaring fire and traditional fixtures and fittings.

They even have a centuries-old traditional North York Moors "Witches Post" to keep evil-doers at bay!

These used to be common in homes across the Moors, but there's not many left these days.

But you'll be safe from Witches whenever you visit the Moors Inn!

There's also a small "snug" and a dining room out the back.

At the front and in the courtyard behind are also tables forming two outdoor areas to watch the World go by on a warm summer day.

And they have seven en-suite rooms for people wanting accommodation in this lovely village.

You'll like it and I can't recommend the Moors Inn highly enough.

Moors Inn Bar

There's a Nice Bar Offering Three Hand-pulled Real-Ales.

And for someone looking for "an escape to the Country" lifestyle, the Moors Inn could be your perfect opportunity.

The current owners - Mike and Janet Frank - are reaching retirement age and are looking to sell-up at the pub and settle-down to a quieter life.

So being located in a picture-perfect village which is popular with walkers; with a nice community feel; and being a pub with a good trade - with bar, food, and accommodation income streams - it just needs the right people to continue it's story.

Moors Inn Fire

The Roaring Fire and Original Iron Range are Lovely Features.

For food or accommodation bookings, contact the Moors Inn on 01751 417435.

And telephone Janet if you're interested in buying the pub!

Appleton-le-Moors

Appleton has an interesting history.

It's an early example of a North Yorkshire new-town.

But it was laid out in the 12th Century!

And its a near-perfect example of a planned medieval Yorkshire village.

Moors Inn Witch Post

Make Sure to Look for the Witch Post in the Moors Inn.

You'll notice a very wide main street which originally gave room for common grazing of animals all those years ago.

You'll also see that each "toft" or house-plot runs to a back lane.

The tenant farmer on each toft would have a farm house, animal houses and a barn.

Appleton also has some appealing local architecture; with the village school and church having a distinctive French Gothic style.

Both were constructed in the 1860s by the architect J.L. Pearson.

Moors Inn Accommodation

There's Nice Accommodation in the Converted Barns and Stables behind the Pub.

So a gentle stroll around the village after a visit to the Moors Inn will certainly reward any visitor.

And a visit to the Moors Inn for Sunday Lunch will sustain you if you're walking or cycling back to Rosella Cottage!

Getting to the Moors Inn

About seven-miles distant, the Moors Inn (Postcode = YO62 6TF) is just a short drive from Rosella Cottage in Rosedale Abbey; and within walking or comfortable cycling distance.

For other visitors, access is off the A171 between Helmsley and Pickering - turn at Keldhome or Aislby and follow the signs.
