Temple Moore Trail on the North York Moors

The Temple Moore Trail in the North York Moors provides lovers of Church architecture the chance to get to know about the life and work of Victorian-era Temple Moore (1856-1920) while taking in the beautiful scenary of the North York Moors.

There are 20 Temple Moore Churches scattered around the North York Moors.  Others are to be found in Scarborough and Middlesbrough.  He built more than 40 Churches in total.

The 20 moorland Churches are considered to be masterpieces of the late Gothic Revival, a style of architecture that Temple Moore raised to a new level of beauty and refinement.

How many of the Churches you visit on the Temple Moore Trail is up to you.

And whether you walk, cycle, or drive is also a personal choice.

But the possibilities and trip routes are virtually endless!

Please note, not all the buildings on the trail are open to the public, and some of them are only open at certain times.

To assist in your trail planning, there is a Temple Moore Trail App available from the Apple Store which contains all sorts of information about the Temple Moor Churches you can visit.

The main maps you’ll need are Ordnance Survey Explorer OL26 North York Moors Western Area and OL27 North York Moors Eastern Area.

Our favourite local Temple Moore Churches include St Hilda's in Danby Dale, St Mary & Apostles in Farndale and St James' in Lealholme.  All three are only 20-25 minutes away from Rosedale Abbey by car.
