History of Spyglass 1708

Whitby is a very historic old sea port, with some very old homes.

But nowadays, many of the former fishermen's houses have been converted into use as holiday homes.

Whilst being Beautiful to Look at, many Whitby Holiday Homes are Tiny inside.

Because the fisher folk of Whitby were so poor in olden days, thier homes were tiny; with cramped rooms, low ceilings, small kitchens, little windows providing inadequate light, and outside conveniences.

The design limitations of those old cottages are still with us today in many of Whitby's holiday homes.

While they may look quaint from the outside, holidays for families in a cottage with tiny rooms, no views, low ceilings and inadequate kitchens and bathrooms is really not so much fun.

And that's why Spyglasss 1708 is such a welcome addition to the Whitby holiday home scene!

We have Big, Light and Airy Rooms.

You see, Spyglass was originally constructed in 1708 as a wealthy Gentleman Quaker's Townhouse.

Thomas Walker was a Quaker shipping merchant and one of the wealthiest inhabitants of Whitby at the time.

So Thomas, and his wife Elizibeth built a very large family home in Rose & Crown Yard; with views of the harbour so Thomas could keep an eye on the comings and goings of his fleet of merchant ships.

They built their early-Georgian Townhouse with large rooms, high ceilings, huge windows with great views, and all mod-cons of the period.

The Master Bedroom is an Elegant and Nicely Decorated Space.

You'll still find those early design characteristics in Spyglass 1708 today; and it is a Grade II listed property in Whitby's conservtion precinct.

For a holiday home in Whitby, Spyglass offers guests lots of space!

It's also a light and airy property with the main living area benefitting from four windows set into three walls.

The main bedroom also benefits from two very large sash-windows and a lovely large en-suite with laundry annex.

And even the second bedroom is a nice big space with two windows and it's own top-floor toilet.
