Scampston Hall & Walled Gardens

If you love looking at beautiful houses and gardens, I'd say we're blessed in that deparment in North Yorkshire.

There are lovely walled-gardens in Helmsley; and also at Castle Howard.

But perhaps our own favourite is the walled garden at Scampston Hall near Malton.

Unusally for a stately home, Scampston has a contemporary walled garden designed by the famous Dutch gadener Piet Oudolf.

And Scampston Hall is, itself, a fine regency-era Stately Home that re-opens for public tours in May 2014.

Fully restored, Scampston Hall remains a family home and there are no ropes or other barriers to be seen for small groups taking a guided tour.

Our favourite activity at Scampston is to take the Cascade Circuit Walk which gives the opportunity to visit the traditional gardens around the house including the Rock Garden, the Woodland Garden and the Lancelot 'Capability' Brown lakes and park.

A family ticket (2 adults and 3 children) gives access to the House and Gardens for £30.

A family ticket for just the gardens is £22.50.

Scampston Hall and its Garden is located about 19 miles to the Southwest of Rosedale Abbey at Rillington to the north of the A64 York to Scarborough road.

It is approximately 5 miles from Malton (postcode = YO17 8NG).

There is a restaurant in the gardens, but please note that dogs are not permitted.
