Badgers Near Rosedale Abbey

Visitors to Rosella Cottage who love British wildlife can have a close encounter with our  local badgers.

Tours to our local badger sett are led by Jane Payne from mid-May until August.

Badgers are England’s largest wild mammals; but finding them in the remote areas of the North York Moors is not easy.

Badgers are Lovely English Animals.

Badgers live underground in multi-chambered setts which can be hundreds of years old.

And they are nocturnal, making it necessary to view them in the late evening, night or early morning..

The cubs are born in February and come outside the sett for the first time in April or May.

By the year’s end, male offspring are chased away, as the brood father doesn’t want to be challenged.

The badger tour visits a Forestry Commission hide in a remote wood, overlooking a sett which has been used for well over 100 years by generations of badger.

People come from all over the UK to see them.

And keeping the location secret helps protect the animal from illegal persecution.
