The North York Moors in Spring

The North York Moors is one of Britain's oldest, and most popular National Parks.

Although we don't have picturesque lakes and dramatic mountain peaks; a holiday or weekend in the North York Moors National Park still makes for a perfect break.

Here's why!

Instead of mountains, we have Moorland.

In fact, the North York Moors provides the most extensive area of high Moorland in England; and the Moors are regarded by a biologists as an ecological wonder.

Did you know - we have remnant plants left over from the last ice-age which occur nowhere else in England?

Come in spring to see the magnificent show of wild British Daffodils in Farndale or Rosedale; or the native bluebells in the woods around Roseberry Topping.

Visit in August or early September to discover huge tracts of Moorland in its beautiful show of purple heather.

We also have the largest number of ancient or veteran trees in Yorkshire; some of which are nearly 1,000 years old.

But the parks' most famous residents are our hardy sheep which call the high Moorland home; and roam freely over hundreds of square miles.

But they aren't alone!

There are fallow, roe, and sika deer; otters have returned; badger, fox, and hare are all quite common; and birdlife is prolific.

But people don't just visit for our natural attractions.

We also have loads of pretty villages and fabulous local market towns to explore; plus hundreds of historic sites, castles, church's, and museums.

Hutton-le-Hole is one of the most picturesque villages in the park; and you'll discover the Ryedale Folk Museum in the village centre.

The seaside villages of Staithes, Runswick Bay and Robin Hoods Bay are also always popular.

Whitby is a World-famous destination for its history, drama, and fish 'n' chips.

And Helmsley, Kirkbymoorside, Pickering, and Malton all provide lively weekly street markets for those who love a bargain!
