What's New in Malton?

Over the previous 30-years; and seemingly at an accelerating pace; we have seen the closure of numerous historic Inns around the North York Moors.

Without trying too hard, I could list the following pub closures in a couple of minutes of thinking - the Robin Hood (Castleton), the Mitre (Glaisdale), The Top End Tavern (Lingdale), the Moorlands Hotel (Castleton), the Milburn Arms (Rosedale), the Appletree, (Sinnington) and the White Horse (Kirkbymoorisde).

I'm sure there are a good few other village "locals" that have disappeared as well.

So when a new pub actually opens - it is a good reason to celebrate!

And it is also a better reason to get out and about, have a meal and a few drinks, and show some community support for any folks willing to "give it a go" in these post-GFC times.

The New Malton

One new place we've tried recently is in the pretty market town of Malton - and appropriately named as the "New Malton" - opened in August 2011.

You can discover the pub for yourself in the Market Place in the centre of Malton town (postcode = YO17 7LX).

The New Malton

The New Malton in Market Square, Malton Toiwn Centre.

I'd describe the New Malton as a "pub restaurant" with a big focus on food rather than Ale.

But it is a warm and welcoming place and not at all stuffy.

There are newspapers and even a well-stocked book shelve which appeals to me as an avid reader - and nice views over the historic Market Square and Church.

So it makes an ideal place for a bit of lunch, or more serious dinner.

Malton Church

The Pub Overlooks the Old Church in Malton's Market Square.

Chef Anthony offers a long list of main courses - at least 15 when we visited recently - plus a shorter menu of lighter bites which may be ideal for lunch, or for children.

We' visited with our own children and I'd say the pub is child-friendly - and our kids loved the fresh fish-finger sandwiches off the light menu.

They also offer high-chairs for small children who are eating in the bar-lounge area.

Inside New Malton

A Good Menu and Child-friendly Makes It Ideal for Lunch with Family.

The new managers - Anthony Gillham and Gemma Williams - also say they welcome well-behaved dogs - which is another plus for many people visiting this part of North Yorkshire with pets in tow.

The New Malton is open from 1130am to 11pm every day except Sunday; Sunday opening is noon to 1030pm. For bookings and further information, telephone the New Malton on 01653 693998.

Getting to Malton

You'll find the New Malton at 2-4 Market Street in Malton.

Malton is a mile or so off the A64 running between York and Scarborough.

It can also be accessed via Train with a station in Malton town centre.

For guests staying in Rosella Cottage, take the valley road out of the village past the Coach House Inn and towards the A170.

Turn left at the A170 and drive into Pickering which is 10-miles from Rosedale Abbey.

At the roundabout in Pickering, take the A169 directly to Malton - about 9 miles further on.
