Surfing at Saltburn-by-the-Sea

Saltburn-by-the-Sea has long been known as a North Yorkshire surf-break.

I remember John Smith, father of my first girl-friend surfing there through the 1970s; and he must have been one of the Saltburn "originals".  Now sadly gone.

But the surfing has grown from stength-to-strength over the years and it's always nice to watch the surfer's in the waves just along from the famous Saltburn pier.

And Saltburn is a just 30-40-minutes away by car or motorbike from Rosedale Abbey over the North York Moors.

But it's not just the surfing that Saltburn is famous for!

You'll find that a visit to Saltburn offers many other rewards.

For starters, there's the original Edwardian-era cliff-lift to get from the beach and pier up to the town.  It's water-powered and fantastic.

And the beach at Saltburn offers some of the best sand on the Yorkshire Heritage Coast.

I'd also recommend a walk along Saltburn Sands towards the Jolly-Sailors - a genuine and original smugglers Inn at the start of the high Saltburn cliffs.

If you're lucky, you might get to see some of the local inshore "cobbles" coming ashore with a catch of fresh fish or crabs.  It's always a nice treat to see a bit of local tradition.

Up in the town itself, the high-street is also interesting with its Edwardian-era white bricks and with some pleasent shops available for brousing.

So it's easy enough to spend a day out exploring all that is on offer in Saltburn.

And the return scenic drive across the high North York Moors is a final reward for a great day of sight-seeing on the coast.
