Rosella Cottage School Holiday Ideas

As parents, we certainly know that it may seem difficult to fill school holidays with meaningful family-based activities which bring us all closer together.

But there are certainly plenty of family-friendly holiday activities to be had when holidaying in Rosedale Abbey in the heart of the North York Moors.

And best of all, they're often free or very inexpensive.

Listed below are some of our favourite free family-friendly holiday activities.

1.  Challenging the kids to ascend the the 199-steps at Whitby Abbey and keep count as they go.  Don't forget to keep an eye on the marvelous view over the World-famous seaport and Yorkshire Heritage Coastline.

2.  A good jaunty walk along the old ironstone hauling railway cinder track in upper Rosedale.  For families with younger children, you can drive the short way up Chimney bank from Rosedale Abbey village and the walking path is then on a mostly level gradient around the valley from Bank Top.  Prams work quite well on the hard cinder track.

3.  Our kids love rock-pooling at Staithes, Runswick Bay or Robin Hood's Bay on the Yorkshire Heritage Coastline.  Your kids will love it too because the tide is always bringing something exciting to them each time.

4.  "Marching" in family formation along the 1,200 year-old Roman road - known locally as "Wades Causeway" at Goathland.

5. Paying a visit to any of the  beautiful and historic Moorland churches in the villages close by to Rosedale Abbey.  Our children love poking about the old graveyards and asking about the "olden days".

6.  A visit to the Lion Inn at Blakey Ridge to watch the sunset from this 360° panaramic vista.  Great for evening meals as well.

7.  The early morning or evening scenic drive from Rosedale to Hutton-le-Hole, Castleton, Danby Castle, Fryupdale and back to Rosedale is a real treat.  It's a beautiful and scenic route across the high moors and fertile valleys; and each village has it's own unique character.  Most of the villages also have childrens playing fields with play equipment.

8.  Get your kids to try to ride their bikes up Chimney Bank in Rosedale Abbey.  It's the steepest public road in all of England so quite an achievement if they make it to the top.

9.  Get close to nature with some bird or wildlife watching in Rosedale or across the wider North York Moors.  There's plenty of wldlife to be seen.

10.  If the weather is inclement and you need to stay indoors; play a family-fun board game in the comfortable lounge in Rosella Cottage.  Games with family is always a winning combination!
