My attempt at the Cleveland Way National Trail is unusual in that I'm traversing from the Southern end at Filey to finish at Helmsley on the edge of the North York Moors.
The majority of walkers complete the route in the opposite direction - going from Helmsley to Filey.
My walking day started at 736am as I caught the early X93 bus from Spyglass 1708 in Whitby (where I'm staying) to Scarborough; and then the short train trip from Scarborough to Filey to arrive around 920am.
The double decker bus service from Whitby to Scarborough offers grand views across the North York Moors and down to the coast; and it is worth the bus fare just for the scenery!
It also comes with free wi-fi!

From the Filey train station I walked through the old town and down to the Life Boat Station.
That seemed like a good place to start since I'm again raising funds for the RNLI during this walk.
It is an easy enough start to the Cleveland Way at Filey with a generally gentle stroll along the cliff top path towards Scarborough.
I set off from the formal trailhead statue on Filey Brigg at 945am with the ritually-collected pebble safely collected off the beach below!
Filey RNLI Station and Station Supervisor.
It was a quickish walk around the 10-mile cliff path into Scarborough and in time for some fish'n' chips for lunch in the resort towns famous South Bay.
After lunch I followed the road around the Castle headland and all the way through North Bay to Peasholme Park; and then carried on to finish my day at the Three Jolly Sailors pub in Beniston.
From there I caught the bus back to Whitby where I arrived around 4pm.
All-in-all - a great start to my Cleveland Way!
